Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy and can result in dangerously high blood sugar levels.

There are two main types of diabetes:

  • Type 1 diabetes – a lifelong condition characterised by the body’s immune system attacking and destroying the cells that produce insulin.
  • Type 2 diabetes – occurs when the body either does not produce enough insulin or the body’s cells do not respond to insulin properly. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes in the UK.

Diabetes is characterized by insufficient production of insulin or impaired insulin utilization by the body. Insufficient insulin leads to elevated blood sugar levels, which, over time, can lead to serious health complications, including heart disease, vision loss, and kidney disease.

Currently, there is no cure for diabetes, but weight loss, healthy eating, and regular physical activity can be beneficial in managing the condition.
