Focus on garlic

This month we will focus on …Garlic!

Each Monday during December we will give you a new recipe including garlic.

Garlic has been used in medicine for centuries and has many health benefits. Garlic comes from the same family as leeks, chives, spring onions and shallots it’s a good source of vitamin C, vitamin B6, manganese, selenium and antioxidants. Although it’s real benefits come from the compound Allicin which is realised when garlic cloves are crushed, chopped or chewed.

Studies have shown the potential of using garlic for various health conditions such as..
Reducing both total and LDL Cholesterol.
Reducing high blood pressure
Reducing colds/ flu as it has high antiviral effects.

Assuming you can tolerate garlic well (high levels of garlic can trigger IBS in certain individuals) then I would recommend 1 clove a day increasing to 3-4 if a virus is present. Cloves can be added to soups, stews, pasta sources etc.
However if you feel you would like to try garlic to help a medical condition such as high cholesterol then book in with a qualified therapist, email us at health@themindbodyclinic.co.uk or call on 01732441008.
